NCL Round 5: Chattogram on the brink of victory as Hasan Murad's spin and Payel's five-for define the round
The 28th National Cricket League (NCL) is heading into the final day of its fifth round, and Chattogram have put themselves in the strongest position of the round against Sylhet on home soil. At the close of the third day, Chattogram had reached 126 for one in their second innings, chasing 227 for victory. That leaves the hosts needing 101 more runs on the final day with nine wickets in hand — a target that looks comfortable on paper but carries the usual fourth-day uncertainty, given how sharply first-class surfaces in Bangladesh can deteriorate in the morning session.
Chattogram's second innings did not begin smoothly. The top order wobbled early and Mahmudul Hasan Joy fell for just 17. From there, Sadikur Rahman and Md Shah Poran Sohel steadied the chase with an unbroken 91-run stand. Sadikur is unbeaten on 58 and Shah Poran on 51. It is one of the most decisive batting passages of the round: it converted a potentially nervous chase into what now looks like a near-certain result. Two unbeaten fifties on a testing surface point to application and temperament, but one innings is not a form sample, and no promotion judgement should be drawn from it alone.
The turning point of the match was Hasan Murad's bowling. The left-arm orthodox spinner took four wickets as Sylhet were bowled out for 218 in their second innings, turning an eight-run first-innings lead into a modest target. Md Rubel and Md Ashraful Hasan chipped in with two wickets each, which suggests a balanced attack rather than one dominant bowler. Left-arm orthodox spin is a relatively scarce commodity in Bangladesh's domestic structure, and sustained wicket-taking through the season would make him a name worth tracking for red-ball selection.
Sylhet's second innings featured no batter passing fifty, which points less to a single collapse and more to persistent bowling pressure. The match has been low-scoring by first-class standards, consistent with a result-oriented pitch offering assistance to both seam and spin. Home advantage is also a material factor for Chattogram, who are playing in familiar conditions.
Khulna versus Mymensingh is the most alive contest of the round. Following on, Mymensingh reached 315 for nine, built around Al-Amin Jr.'s 102. A century under follow-on pressure is a meaningful technical and temperamental marker. Khulna still hold the upper hand, but the resistance keeps the match open. Sheikh Parvez Jibon took four wickets and Soumya Sarkar three for Khulna. Sarkar's three red-ball wickets are an interesting all-round signal for a player better known as a white-ball batter, though it is a single-innings data point.
At the Rajshahi venue, Barishal reached 266 for eight against Dhaka, with Md Abdullah unbeaten on 62 and captain Iftakhar Hossain Ifti contributing 47. Leg-spinner Aminul Islam Biplob took three wickets for Dhaka.
Rajshahi versus Rangpur in Bogura presents the round's most interesting arithmetic. Rangpur made 256 in their first innings, with Anik Sarker scoring 75 and Iqbal Hosen 70. Rajshahi's Asaduzzaman Payel took five wickets — the biggest individual bowling return reported this round. Despite that, Rajshahi conceded a 25-run first-innings deficit. In their second innings they reached 110 for three, with captain Pritom Kumar unbeaten on 41, extending the lead to 85. The match is far from settled, but Rajshahi have seized the initiative.
Taken together, the four fixtures paint a clear picture. Chattogram are closest to a result; the other three are finely balanced or draw-leaning. Multiple follow-on and lead-deficit situations indicate result pitches and tight contests, which is a healthy signal for the red-ball development pathway. Four simultaneous venues also show that squad depth across eight divisions is being stress-tested at once.
Structurally, the NCL is a development competition, not a commercial franchise league. Its value lies in the talent pipeline rather than broadcast revenue. Al-Amin Jr.'s century, Payel's five-for and Hasan Murad's four-wicket haul are exactly the outputs the league exists to generate. The presence of national players such as Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Soumya Sarkar reinforces its role as a form and fitness verification channel.
Joy's dismissal for 17 should not be read as lost form; one innings in a low-scoring game proves nothing. Equally, Hasan Murad, Sadikur Rahman and Shah Poran Sohel should not be fast-tracked on the basis of a single innings — season-level averages and multi-innings evidence are required.
One caveat is essential. All figures here come from a single, unattributed source and remain pending independent verification; they should be cross-checked against official scorecards before citation. The match is also unfinished, so Chattogram's win is highly likely, not certain.
The final day will decide it. Chattogram need 101 runs; Sylhet need nine wickets. One substantial partnership in the morning should deliver the hosts their second win of the season. But early breakthroughs on a fourth-day surface would restore exactly the kind of uncertainty that red-ball cricket is known for.
