Under-19 Asia Cup: Aaryavir Sehwag and Anvay Dravid in India squad, Lakhya Rai Chandani to lead
India have announced a 15-member squad for the Under-19 Asia Cup, with Aaryavir Sehwag, son of Virender Sehwag, and Anvay Dravid, son of Rahul Dravid, earning places. Lakhya Rai Chandani will captain the side, while Yashvardhan Chauhan will be his deputy. The tournament will be played in Muscat, Oman from November 4 to 14. The squad announcement has put fresh attention on India's youth team, which blends recent form, talent and cricket pedigree.
The selections of Aaryavir and Anvay are significant because both earned their places through recent performances. Aaryavir scored 28, 47 and 34 in the ODI series against Australia. Anvay made 38 and 9 in the same series, and he had earlier played a fine 87 off 67 balls in the last ODI against Sri Lanka. Anvay is the first-choice wicketkeeper, with Rajat Baghel as the second wicketkeeper in the squad.
India are placed in Group A alongside Nepal, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates. Group B includes Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. The top two teams from each group will reach the semi-finals. Every group match matters because an early defeat can complicate the path to the knockout stage.
India's youth side are in strong form ahead of the tournament. They whitewashed Australia 2-0 in the four-day series played in September and October, and then won the ODI series 3-0. Earlier, India beat Sri Lanka 1-0 in the two-match four-day series, though they lost the ODI series 2-1.
Captain Lakhya Rai Chandani impressed with the bat in the four-day series against Australia, scoring 250 runs in three innings. He made a superb 240 in the first match, showing his ability to play a long innings. His form as captain is a positive sign for India, as confidence matters when players return from the longer format to one-day cricket.
Vice-captain Yashvardhan Chauhan was India's leading batter in the ODI series, scoring 176 runs in two innings, including a century in the second match. His form gives stability to the middle order. Runs from both the captain and vice-captain are encouraging for the team because senior players' form often lifts the morale of the entire side in a major tournament.
Aaryavir Sehwag will face a different kind of pressure because he is the son of a cricketer who built a reputation for aggressive batting in Indian cricket. However, the selectors did not pick him merely because of his name. His scores of 28, 47 and 34 against Australia show that he is making consistent starts. He now needs to convert those starts into bigger scores and prove his role in a tournament like the Asia Cup.
Anvay Dravid has been chosen as the first-choice wicketkeeper. He scored 38 and 9 in the ODI series against Australia, but his 87 off 67 balls in the last ODI against Sri Lanka is a strong reminder of his ability. If he can score quickly in the lower order along with keeping wickets, India will gain better balance. Rajat Baghel provides another wicketkeeping option.
India's 15-member squad is: Lakhya Rai Chandani (captain), Aaryavir Sehwag, VK Vinit, Yashvardhan Chauhan (vice-captain), Kushagra Ojha, Arjun Rajput, Manal Chauhan, Anvay Dravid (wicketkeeper), Rajat Baghel (wicketkeeper), V. Yashveer, Aryan Savsani, Mohit Ulva, Kavya Patel, Shavin Vinod and Ishan Sud.
The squad gives opportunities to young talent. Some players have experience in domestic youth cricket, while others have proved their usefulness in recent international youth matches. The selectors have focused on building a side that can balance pace bowling, spin and batting. In a short tournament like the Asia Cup, every player gets limited opportunities, so fitness and form must come together at the right time.
Pakistan's presence in India's group always adds excitement. The rivalry may not attract as much attention at youth level as it does among senior teams, but the intensity of the contest is not lower. Nepal have been improving in youth cricket in recent years, while the UAE can cause an upset through experience. India cannot afford to take any team lightly.
Group B includes Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka can be considered strong sides, while Afghanistan continue to improve at youth level. Malaysia face a big challenge, but in a tournament format one good day can make a big difference for any team. India must focus on their group matches and not think too far ahead about the semi-finals.
Adapting to conditions in Muscat will be an important factor. Moving from four-day cricket to the one-day format, players will need to manage both their rhythm and the sharpness of their bowling. India have the experience of recent matches, but the pressure in the Asia Cup will be different. For captain Lakhya Rai Chandani, this is a chance to prove his decision-making along with his batting.
Aaryavir and Anvay will be under media and spectator attention because both are sons of famous cricketers. But in youth cricket, performance matters more than identity. Both have distinct roles. Aaryavir needs to show consistency in batting, while Anvay has to handle wicketkeeping and lower-order responsibility. If both succeed in their roles, the team will benefit directly.
India's recent performances show that they are strong contenders for the Asia Cup. A clean sweep against Australia in both the four-day and ODI formats is a confidence booster. However, the ODI series defeat to Sri Lanka is also a reminder that consistency in youth cricket can be difficult. The team must focus on its strengths and improve its weaknesses during the tournament.
There does not appear to be any major selection controversy before the Asia Cup. The squad includes a captain, a vice-captain, two wicketkeepers and players with different roles. The responsibility now lies with the players to prove their roles on the field. In a youth tournament, one good innings or one good bowling spell can change the direction of a player's career, so this platform is important for everyone.
India's goal should be not just reaching the semi-finals but winning the title. For that, they need to find rhythm from the early matches. Group games against Pakistan and the UAE will test the team's morale and strategy. India must also be cautious against Nepal because smaller teams play without pressure on a big stage and can cause upsets.
Overall, the Indian Under-19 team has both talent and form. The batting of captain Lakhya Rai Chandani and vice-captain Yashvardhan Chauhan gives the side strength, while names like Aaryavir Sehwag and Anvay Dravid bring extra attention and competition. It remains to be seen how quickly this young team adapts to conditions in Muscat and how far it goes in the Asia Cup.
